SIDS is the number one cause of death in infants between one month and one year of age. It is sudden and unexpected and even after an autopsy no cause of death is found. In a typical situation, parents go to check on their infant they think is sleeping only to find their baby dead. There is no greater tragedy.

Since the American SIDS Institute was founded in 1983 the annual number of deaths has decreased by over half. However, there are still about 2,300 babies who die of SIDS each year in the US. Many scientists around the world are working to find the cause of SIDS and one day we will know how to prevent it. In the mean time there are things parents and others can do to reduce the risk of death. For a complete list, go to the Institute's web site at www.sids.org. The 3 things below are easy to remember and can significantly reduce an infant's risk of SIDS.

Smoke-Free

Do not smoke during pregnancy and don't ever let anyone smoke around the baby.

Back to Sleep

Place the baby to sleep (day and night) on her back in a crib or bassinet with a firm mattress. Place the crib close to the parents' bed.

Bare Crib

Nothing should be in the crib but the baby and the clothing needed to stay warm (but not too warm). This means no pillows, blankets, toys, bumpers, or positioning devices.
